A battle is brewing.  To the left, dark and evil clouds shrouded in mystery are gathering for a strike. To the right, puffy white clouds are preparing to hold their ground.  The clear blue battle line is narrowing as the darkside is making a charge at the lightside and darkening everything below its path.  The battle commences, and the only victims appear to be the little people below as sides collide… and the precipitation ensues.

What an experience and what a roller-coaster of a day.  Today was a mixture of bliss and misery, wet and dry, high and low, fast and slow, and hot and cold.  And it finished with the most peaceful ride towards another beautiful sunset with the wind at our backs.  Today, we experienced the Rockies.

As we started our ride, we watched as the temperature started to drop from 70 to 60, to 50… and dipped into the 30s as we ascended to over 12,000 feet at the Continental Divide going over Independence Pass on Highway 82 (which is open only a few months out of the year).  The first few hours were the most beautiful we’ve had on this trip; puffy clouds extending over mountain peaks and shifting colors as the season extends into the fall.

We suited up with all our gear as we ascended, and only get a little wet before reaching the peak.  It even stopped raining for the short period we were at the peak and it permitted us to take a few pictures.  Thanks!  But, as we descended on the western side, we were blessed with a delightfully chilled shower.  And guess what… we spent an hour yesterday washing and waxing our bikes… these babies looked good!  After today, they look liked dirt bikes after playing in the mud.

Instead of giving too many details, here is our day in pictures:
