Day 40 – D-Day, the Final Leg Home

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

A day filled with mixed feelings and emotions.  Fully rested, fully packed, bikes are mounted… but are we truly ready to go?  That is the question of the day.

Day 39 – Up the 101

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

The sun slowly rising, the waves crashing against the sea banks, the tide coming in, the wind gently caressing the trees above, and the squirrels and chipmunks scrambling for their nuts… it’s just too bad we couldn’t see any of it.  What we thought was the morning fog, turned into the afternoon fog and then the evening fog.  The fog was so dense we were more likely to see Bigfoot than the coastline.  We rode along the 101-North for 9 hours when we might as well been driving on a main highway surrounded by white padded walls on all sides.  Because we were going crazy today from lack of sunshine and ocean!

Day 38 – Over the Mountains to Arcata

Monday, September 13, 2010

We had such a great and relaxing time with our family, it was hard to leave.   We’d like to thank John for letting us stay at his place! In fact, after loading up our stuff, Jerry looked at Greg and said ‘Well, back to reality.’  Which Greg took as quite ironic since he was insinuating that getting on our bikes and riding all day is ‘back to reality.’   What he meant by it though is that the party is over and we’ll be leaving our comfortable ‘resort’.  You can tell it’s been a long adventure when the adventure is becoming the norm!  So what does it mean when we return home…?

Day 37 – Day off in Granite Bay

Sunday, September 12, 2010

This will be a short post because it was a nice and relaxing day!  We were going to leave and continue up the coast today but it was such a beautiful today, with great people, a pool and… well, as you can see, they really had to pull our leg.

Day 36 – Family Hopping

Saturday, September 11, 2010

Fun and easy day that consisted of hopping around seeing wonderful family and friends.  Started off the morning with breakfast with the welcoming Randazzo family, cleaned our bikes, and headed out.  Our first stop… a soccer game!

Day 35 – Blowing Tires, Weaving Roads, and San Jose

Friday, September 10th, 2010

We survived the night at the Clown Motel, had a muffin and hit the road. We had perfect temperatures, were on the open road, and had little wind.  NOTHING could bring us down.  But something could definitely bring us to a halt.  An hour into the ride we had our first flat tire of the trip… on this road:

Day 34 – Fuming through Nevada

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Today was a gas!  Or rather, a lack of it.  Traveling through Utah and Nevada could not have been more unpredictable.  We ran out of gas twice, had to drive at a snail’s pace, saw more animals than people, had close encounters with some antelope, and were almost abducted by aliens.  Interesting day.

Day 33 – Rolling Over the Rockies

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

A battle is brewing.  To the left, dark and evil clouds shrouded in mystery are gathering for a strike. To the right, puffy white clouds are preparing to hold their ground.  The clear blue battle line is narrowing as the darkside is making a charge at the lightside and darkening everything below its path.  The battle commences, and the only victims appear to be the little people below as sides collide… and the precipitation ensues.

What an experience and what a roller-coaster of a day.  Today was a mixture of bliss and misery, wet and dry, high and low, fast and slow, and hot and cold.  And it finished with the most peaceful ride towards another beautiful sunset with the wind at our backs.  Today, we experienced the Rockies.

Day 32 – Day off in Lakewood, CO

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Unfortunately, our buddy Adam had to work most of the day, but he was still kind enough to wake up extra early to take us for a motorcycle ride to the lookout point in Lakewood.  Jerry was unable to go because in the morning we found an oil leak and he headed straight to the shop.

During Day 31 – Sweet Old Geraldine

* Long Story

When driving through Kansas we had no idea how barren this ride would be.  Stopping at a gas station we discussed when we wanted to eat.  We decided that we were both a little hungry and we’d put on a few more miles and hit up the first exit that had a food joint… anything simple would do.  Wowza…  We had no idea that it would be another 70 miles before we saw something!  And the only place in the area was Wendy’s, so that’s where we ate.
